How can I change the estimated taxes applied from last year?

In California Form 540, line 72, it shows we have applied last year's refund to this year's estimated taxes. Last year's refund in TurboTax turned out to be incorrect and we paid the state directly.

Now, however, TurboTax is showing that as a refund for 2020 and being applied to 2021 estimated taxes. The amount listed is too high and is creating a false refund for 2021 taxes.

How/where do I change this?

The form does not allow any changes and the Help Center hints at it coming from the Federal form. I cannot find it anywhere where I can actually change it to $0 (correct amount).

You can make the necessary changes to your estimated tax payments, including any amount that was supposed to be applied from your 2020 return.  It's important to have the correct amount so you don't have any surprises.

  1. Sign into your TurboTax Account > Deductions & Credits > Estimates and Other Taxes Paid > Estimates
  2. Other Income Taxes > Start/Update/Revisit > Scroll to 2020 Refund Applied
  3. Select 2020 refund applied to 2021 state taxes > Start/Update/Revisit
  4. Select your state and enter the amount.
