This amount needs to be included under the Form W-2, Box 14, and select NY IRS 414(h) Subject to NY tax.

In TurboTax, please do the following:

  1. Federal Taxes
  2. Wages & Income
  3. Wages and Salaries, click Revisit
  4. On the W-2 page, scroll down to Box 14.
  5. Select NY IRS 414(h) Subject to NY tax

I had put "other - not on the list above " instead of NY IRS 414h for some reason. Thank you

I received a bill from NYS due to the 414H. When I did the taxes in 2017 I selected 414hnot. I cannot recall an option stating this was taxable.

If you failed to choose the proper box 14 code then the state return would be incorrect...getting a letter from the state pointing out the error is expected.

How do you know to select 414H subject to NY tax or exempt from NY tax from box 14 on the w-2?

So the amount in box 14 for 414(h) should always be selected as taxable for NY State?

if you are using Turbo Tax Online, there is a drop down in Box 14 that you can select that indicates:

  1. NY IRC 414H Subject to NY taxes or
  2. NY IRC 414H TaxExempt

Report it the way that it reported in your W2 if it is indicated. If you are not sure or if it isn't indicated, check with your employer or select that it is taxable so you won't be penalized for not reporting.
