Have a NY W-2 for group life insurance over $50K. File with Federal; No NY return, right? Not a NY resident

Yes, you are correct.  Unless the W-2 reported New York earnings and tax withheld (Boxes 15-17), you don't have to file a NY tax return.

The value of your group term life insurance from previous employer is a benefit, not earned income.
