Gambling winnings in non-resident state

I was a full-time student in 2019 and claimed by my parents as a dependent. I had an interest income of about $950 and then gambling winnings in the state of Massachusetts of $700. I got a 1099-misc from MA for that amount, no taxes withheld. My home state is Colorado. I stated on Fed return I had gambling winnings in MA,  and TurboTax did not let me file federal  or CO taxes(I owed a little on both) but said I had to file also Massachusetts. So I had to buy the MA state package(for $45, more than I owed in CO!) Now when I go through MA there is nowhere to enter the gambling winnings other than as a write in number and it does not show I owe taxes in MA. Help! What to do. Can I get a refund for the MA Turbotax download?

It sounds like the amount of income may have been below the reporting threshold for Massachusetts.

We can't issue a refund from this message board because we need to gather personal information from you to do that.

The threshold in MA is $600 according to their website. And when I try to file Federal and Colorado taxes in Turbo Tax, Turbo Tax says I have to file MA taxes since I entered gambling winnings in MA. How do I get around that?

You can't get around it.

Massachusetts taxes all nonresidents on income earned from gambling winnings within MA.  The $600 only applies to issuing Form W-2G for your winnings.

Please see the attached link with more information for gambling winnings in MA.

MA gambling and lottery information for taxes

You will input your winnings in the Federal input section.

  1. Go to Income & Expenses
  2. Scroll down until you see the section under All Income.  Select Less Common Income.
  3. Select Gambling winnings
  4. Proceed to answer the questions and enter information as applicable from your Form W-2G.
  5. If you had any state withholdings on your winnings, be sure to enter that information here as well.

This information will pull into your Massachusetts returns.
