For Virginia income tax Form 760, if you itemized using the general sales taxes instead of state income taxes, do you need to add the general sales taxes back on line 11?

The instructions for line 11 (on Virginia form 760) is to add the "State and Local Income Taxes claimed on Virginia Schedule A". If you claim the general sales tax deduction instead of state and local income taxes, do you use the general sales tax amount as the "state and local income tax" amount?

No, you do not. Virginia and any local income taxes are the only items that get added back in on Line 11.

Are you sure property and sales taxes are not eligible deduction at the state level? According to the https://tax.virginia.gov/deductions, "You can generally claim the same deductions for Virginia purposes that you claimed on your federal Schedule A, except for the deduction for state and local income taxes."

You are 100% right. This is embarrassing because I am from Virginia and I just answered a question very similar to this the correct way a couple of days ago. Their question was "what goes on Line 11?". It is very clear that it is just income taxes. I have edited my answer to reflect the correct response. Thank you!!
