As in this article:
The filing and payment deadline has been extended to 10/16/2023. I live in Santa Clara county, which is one of the impacted area. I did some initial filing and I do owe taxes, so would it mean that:
1) I can wait until 10/15/2023 to file and pay for BOTH federal and California taxes?
2) I can still use TurboTax to do them electronically and I won't be warned by TurboTax and won't need to pay any late penalties? I'm asking this because I see that TurboTax is still reminding me that the deadline is 04/18/2023.
Thanks!
The article definitely applies to Federal taxes. It is not usual for the payment date also be extended, usually just the filing date. But this case is rare, For CA taxes you need to contact the state offices to see what their policy is. Usually with your Federal extension you get a state extension, but not a payment extension. Unless you file for an extension with turbotax they will not know that you have until October to file your taxes.
Both the IRS and the California FTB have extended the tax filing and payment deadlines to October 16, 2023, for California residents in counties affected by the winter flooding and mudslides.
I have the same issue. Have you tried to complete Turbo Tax with an extended filing and payment? Did it recognize the extension?
California individuals and businesses impacted by the 2022-23 winter storms qualify for an extension until Oct. 16, 2023, to file and pay taxes. View our emergency tax relief page for more information. No application is required for an extension to file.
Yes, I have same situation. When will TurboTax be updated to allow us to file by our extended deadlines?
IRS, TurboTax and California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) are working diligently to resolve all issues and get forms ready for filing. just keep checking back often to see if you can now file. Please use the link below for additional information from CA FTB.

+1 to this question. Currently with the latest TurboTax Desktop, it still does NOT allow me to set the payment date after April 18th?
When will this be fixed?
I have the same question. I am using Turbotax desktop for 2022 tax filing in CA. Does it recognize/support the automatic extension so no additional penalty for payment after 4/18?
Same here. I am using turbotax desktop and tried to e-file and set payment date to be October but wouldn't let me proceed. When will this be fixed?
Same here - TurboTax still says "You can schedule the data to make your tax payment, however, it must be received by the IRS on or before April 18, 2023 to avoid any penalties."

Thanks Katrina.
While we hope to have the fix/solution in turbotax soon, would like to confirm with the automatic extension from IRS/FTB, there will be no interest/penalty as long as we file/pay by 10/16 right?
As long as you live in one of the affected areas, defined by the IS, there will be no penalty/interest as long as you file and pay by 10/16/2023.
This is correct. You must file and pay by 10/16/2023 to avoid late filing and late payment penalties.
Please refer to the IRS: May 15 tax deadline extended to Oct. 16 for disaster area taxpayers in California, Alabama and Georgia and CA FTB extends filing deadline for taxpayers impacted by 2022-23 winter storms to Oct. 16, 2023 websites for more information.
any update on Turbotax support of this automatic extension for CA residents so no penalty/interest calculated when we use turbotax to file Fed/state return by 10/16/2023?
Thanks Carissa. Will TurborTax impose any penalty/interest if file/pay by 10/16 for CA residents in disaster areas?
No. The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area. Therefore, taxpayers do not need to contact the agency to get this relief.
However, if an affected taxpayer receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS that has an original or extended filing, payment or deposit due date falling within the postponement period, the taxpayer should call the number on the notice to have the penalty abated.
In addition, the IRS will work with any taxpayer who lives outside the disaster area but whose records necessary to meet a deadline that occurs during the postponement period are located in the affected area. Taxpayers qualifying for relief who live outside the disaster area need to contact the IRS at 866-562-5227. This also includes workers assisting the relief activities who are affiliated with a recognized government or philanthropic organization.
