Filing California state tax by mail - Turbo tax says include "1099s that have California withholding you may have received"

I am filing state tax by mail. Turbo Tax says:

Attach the following to your California tax return:

  • a copy of your federal return
  • any Form(s) W-2G, 592-B, 593, and 1099s that have California withholding you may have received

I am not sure which "1099s" to include. I have 1099-R, 1099-Int & 1099G. or is it referring to "1099-s" which is not applicable for me.

A "1099" is any and all of 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-R, 1099-anything. So if you have any "1099-whatever's" with Calif withholding on it then attach it. Don't attach a 1099 that doesn't have Calif withholding because that annoys the return processing folks at the Franchise Tax Board.

Thanks TurboTaxTerry..

And how do I know if a 1099 has CA withholding?

You have to look around on the 1099: On a 1099-INT it would be in Boxes 15-17; 1099-R Boxes 12 & 13; 1099-G Boxes 10a, 10b & 11. If they existed you should have entered those into their entry screens in TT/Federal.

If the withhold number is 0 in 1099-INT, do I still need to print and attach it?

i wondered about that too, and the weird part was that they didn't want me to include my w2. i think that this is a mistake on the software part of turbo tax. i have an exemption but i also have a job where i paid taxes. don't i get credit or refund for my withholding from my non-exemption job?

Yes, you are required to attach a copy of your W-2 forms, whether they show state tax withheld or not.

You are not required to attach any 1099 forms where the state tax is $0 or blank. Click here for more.
