Filing 2018 NY State Return - cannot e-file on TT Desktop bc it requires Fed Return to be filed at same time?

I am trying to e-file my NY state return (my understanding is that e-file is required) for 2018.  

 

My understanding is that TurboTax Desktop allows for NY e-file from years 2018 and later - https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile/homepc.htm#:~:text=You%20may%20e-file%20your,2021%20using%20approved%20commercial%20software.

 

I am using TurboTax Desktop (2018).

 

TurboTax Desktop does not allow me to e-file NY without e-filing a Federal Return.  But my understanding is that I cannot e-file a Federal return because the window for doing that is closed.

 

Is paper filing my NY and Fed (I also have NJ) my only option now?

Yes, since TurboTax  only files back year returns on paper.
