Filed taxes in NY but forgot NJ

I filed state taxes in 2012 and 2013 in NY, but forgot to file in NJ. I work in NY but live in NJ. Usually my taxes go towards NY, and I am able to deduct against my NJ taxes. I end up owing a very small amount since my NY deducts against most of NJs. It seems that since I filed late, I was hit with the full amount of NJ on top of NY's. Is there any way to rectify this so I don't end up on the hook for full amount of both States?

Did you try showing NJ a copy of your NY state return documenting that much of the tax is already paid ?
