Filed tax in the wrong state

While being a NC resident, with 401K withdrawn and self-employment income (no records or forms available, no income from NY), mistakenly filed state tax return in NY instead of NC. How to amend the return as there is no records for and income from NY? I used my permanent address in NYC for both returns, which I probably shouldn't have.

You will file an amended tax return for New York and then file a return with North Carolina to properly report the income there.

To do this in TurboTax, simply log back into your account at TurboTax.com and then select the option "Amend a tax return already filed."  You will then remove the items of income from the New York state return to complete the amendment and follow the instructions TurboTax gives you to print and mail the return.

After you complete the New York return, click on the option Add a State in the TurboTax menu to add North Carolina and then apportion the income items to North Carolina (the entries you made in the federal program will still be there for the items of income) to complete the North Carolina income.

It is not uncommon to have an address in one state but for your income to be from another (such as when you move after the end of the tax year.)  However, if you wish to update your address before filing you may do so in the Personal Info section of the program.
