Although you can e-file your federal and state taxes together, if you choose to e-file your federal first, you'll have to wait until that return has been accepted before you can e-file your state.

Once your federal return has been accepted you should be able to e-file your state return.

To e-file your return:

  1. In TurboTax Online, sign in to your account.
  2. Select Tax Home in the left menu.
  3. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
  4. Select 2020, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you into the right area).
  5. Select File in the left menu (expand your browser window if you don't see this, or select the menu icon in the top left corner).
  6. On the Just one more step screen, follow steps 1 and 2 if you haven't already.
  7. Select the Start button to the right of Step 3.
  8. On the Let's get ready to e-file screen, select I want to e-file.
  9. Follow the instructions to e-file your return.

Hi! I'm using the windows version on PC, and my federal return was already efiled and accepted, but I still have to same issue. I can't efile my state return. Would you please kindly tell me what to do?

I am encountring the same problem.  I efiled my federal return on 3/4/21, accepted by IRS on the 5th. Now, over a week later, I want to efile the Michigan tax return and it won't let me file.  I am using Turbo Tax Deluxe version installed on my computer (I am not using online tax service for preparation or efile).

I too am running into the same problem.  I efiled my federal return on 3/10/21, it was accepted by the IRS on the 11th. Now, I'm trying to efile the Ohio state tax return and it won't let me file. It keeps telling me I have to go back a screen and select to efile the Federal tax too. That won't work because the screen back there shows that the Federal tax has already been filed and accepted. There is no option to select Federal even if I wanted to.   I am using Turbo Tax Deluxe version installed on my computer not the online version.
