Does Turbotax automatically report that I filed my state taxes when I complete my federal taxes?

I did not pay my my state taxes for last year because I think I remember turbotax saying I didn't owe any. However I did complete and pay my federal taxes . Will this automatically file my state taxes or is that a separate issue?

Thanks

You have to initiate the filing of state return.

I never did that before and it wen't through just fine. Why do I have to now file separately?

I don't understand your question.  Federal and state are separate returns.  You have to file federal and state either at the same time or file just federal first.

How to file state after federal

If you owe a state tax due you have to pay it separately to the state.  Check the printout or PDF of your return; look for the state cover sheet with the Turbotax logo.  If you owed tax, it will show the payment information and how/when you decided to pay.  Read the state payment instructions carefully since most states cannot be paid from within the TT system and requires additional steps.

Sorry for the confusion. I filed my federal taxes and turbotax said I completed the process and gave me the PDF forms, but for some reason I am getting notification from the IRS that I did not file my state taxes. How can I find out if I filed them or not?

Thanks!

Federal and state tax returns go to completely separate entities.  The IRS does not have anything to do with your state tax return.   The IRS is only concerned with your federal return.    If you did not file your state return--it is late now and you need to get it filed.

Did you e-file?  Did you click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”

When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say that your return was submitted.  The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected.  If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

If the IRS accepted it, what does it say here?

Or does your account say “Ready to Mail?”

Note:  If it says “Ready to Mail” or “Printed” that means YOU have to mail it yourself.  TurboTax does not mail your tax return for you.
