Does a State Audit Trigger an IRS Audit when 3 year Statute of Limitations Expired on the IRS?

I have been audited by a State within 3 years of my filing my tax return. The audit was completed 4 years after my tax return was filed. The State is claiming additional taxes based on them refusing to accept deductions they claim where made in error.

Does the IRS have a right to also audit me or use the State audit to collect more taxes from me IF the IRS failed to request an audit within the 3 year statute of limitation? (Accept that no circumstances exist to extend the statute of limitation to 6 years or beyond).
