Do I need to file Illinois tax return as a part year resident who didn't earn income as a resident?

I moved from CA to IL in Sep 2016. I quit my job in CA at the same time and did not earn any income in IL during 2016, nor did I earn income after leaving CA. Would I still need to file in IL? I looked up the part year resident filing requirements and I believe I don't need to file, but I'm not certain. Thanks! http://tax.illinois.gov/individuals/filingrequirements/

Based on the information you provided, you are not required to file a 2016 IL tax return.

From the IL DOE website:

If you were a part-year residentyou must file Form IL-1040 and Schedule NR, Nonresident and Part-Year Resident Computation of Illinois Tax, if

  • you earned income from any source while you were a resident,
  • you earned income from Illinois sources while you were not a resident, or
  • you want a refund of any Illinois Income Tax withheld.
