Do I need to file a nonresident AZ tax return for unemployment while living in FL?

Hello! I moved from AZ to FL in August 2022. I was laid off in July 2023. I was eligible to receive AZ unemployment benefits while living in FL. I only received $1,280 and had taxes taken out of $128 already. Do I need to file a nonresident AZ tax return since I received their unemployment benefits even though I did not live there in the calendar year of 2023? Thank you!

Yes, if you received Arizona-sourced income, you should file a nonresident Arizona tax return. Arizona taxes unemployment benefits at the same rate regular income is taxed.

In the state of Arizona, full-year resident or part-year resident individuals must file a tax return if they are:

  • Single or married filing separately and gross income (GI) is greater than $13,850;
  • Head of household and GI is greater than $20,800; or
  • Married and filing jointly and GI is greater than $27,700.

Note: For non-resident individuals the threshold numbers above are prorated based on the individual's Arizona gross income to their federal adjusted gross income.

Even if your Arizona income is under the filing threshold, you should still file if you had Arizona taxes withheld from the unemployment benefits. See this Arizona webpage for more information.
