Do I have to file state tax in mn (where I live) when my job is in south Dakota? It says I get $8 from mn, but I don't see how.

I am a dependent, although filing single.

It depends.  Normally the answer to this question would be yes, you do need to file.  Minnesota taxes all of your income since you live there, even though South Dakota has no income tax.  However, if you did not earn at least 10,350 last year, you would not be required to file a Minnesota return.  See this MN website for more information:  http://www.revenue.state.mn.us/individuals/individ_income/Pages/Who_Must_File_a_Minnesota_Individual...

Because all states have many different rules, it is possible that you may have a small refund from Minnesota.  If that is the case, you may wish to file.  But you will not be required to do so with less than 10,350 of income.  (Of course, if you made more, then you are required to file a return.)
