Do I have to file a state return for Rhode Island (where I reside), when I only work in Massachusetts?

Yes. According to the Rhode Island Division of Taxation, every resident of RI who is required to file a Federal Income Tax return must also file a Rhode Island Income Tax return (RI-1040). You can read all the rules here: 2017 Resident Instructions
