Do I file my resident state or my nonresident state tax return first?

We need to file a tax return for both Missouri, our state of residence, as well as Kansas, because a portion of my husband's income is from Kansas.

Does it matter which one I file first here in Turbo tax?

It is recommended to prepare the nonresident state first.  This is because your resident state will provide you a credit for the tax you pay to the nonresident state.  By preparing the nonresident state first, TurboTax can transfer the credit information to your resident state to return.

Just FYI ... you can file them in any order however you really need to complete them in the order they are listed in the state section ... all non resident states first.

OK, but what do you do if you didn't know that and prepared your resident state first?

There are a few states that are reverse credit where you do prepare resident first. Either way, go back through your resident return to make sure it picks up the non-resident information.

My Office is in New York, my income was taxed in both NY and Connecticut where I live , i re- did the state returns in the order recommended, but I still can not get the credit to my non-resident New York Return. I have a refund in Connecticut and Owe in New York.  They should offset each other. ? Is there any other way to do this?

NY taxes you on the NY source income and CT taxes you as a resident in CT.

If both NY and CT tax you the same income, you should claim a credit for taxes paid to NY on your CT return.

When preparing your multiple-state taxes, prepare NY nonresident return first, the credit should flow to CT resident return properly. Check Schedule 2 of your CT state tax return to see if there is a credit for taxes paid to NY claimed.

I deleted my state returns and let TurboTax redo the states in the correct order.  How easy was that, Thanks
