Do I actually need to file in Massachusetts?

I lived in Massachusetts until May 2023.  I haven't lived in MA or made any money in MA in 2024.  I now live in a different state across the county but Turbo tax keeps saying I need to file a MA return even though I've deleted it.  I'm separated from my spouse who does live in MA but we are doing married filing separately.  Do I actually need to file in MA?  Any ideas?

If you did not live in Massachusetts or earn income there in 2024, you will not file a Massachusetts tax return.  To correct in TurboTax, follow the steps below:

  1. Login to TurboTax
  2. Click My Info
  3. Verify under your name the resident state is listed as your current state
  4. Verify you address is correct
  5. Click the down arrow next to other and select other state income as none
  6. Click state taxes from the left side panel
  7. click state returns and verify Massachusetts has been removed.  If still showing delete return
  8. If you are still having issues, click tax tools from the left side panel
  9. Click tools
  10. Click delete a form
  11. scroll down to state returns and verify Massachusetts is not listed.  If listed delete all forms under the Massachusetts return.
  12. Log out of TurboTax, clear cache and cookies and log back in.

In the My Info section of the program where you are entering your personal information, you should have selected your current state of residence as of 12/31/2024.  You should have also indicated that you did not live in any other states and that you did not earn money in any other states.

When you entered your information in MY INFO did you use your current address ---the one for the state you have lived in during 2024?   When it asked if you made money in any other state----how did you answer that?

Did you receive any sort of W-2 or other tax document from an employer or client in MA?

Are you using an old account that was used for a past year return in which you filed jointly in MA?

Yes, I have done that.  My new address is in there and when it asked if earned money in any other states I said no.  I have no W2s from a company in MA.  But I just keep getting this message that says "You may need to file in Massachusetts" and I can't understand why.  Or if I definitely need to.  I am using the same account as I had last year but I have updated all of the information and indeed I lived in my current state last year as well.

Using your old account might be the problem.   When you use an old online account but change your filing status, there is "stuff" that comes in that will cause errors despite all your efforts to delete or change things.   Hate to say it, but start over in a new online account with a new user ID.

Not sure I agree with that.  I didn’t change my filing status.
