Do Have to file state taxes in California if I earned less than $5,000?

Turbotax is giving me the option to delete my state tax return and only file a federal tax return. Does this mean I only need to file a federal tax return?

Let me know please. Thanks!

It depends.

You may not have a CA state income tax filing requirement unless you have both of the following:

  • Income from all sources that is more than the amount defined in this chart.

So if you are not required to file a US federal income tax return because your income is below the federal income filing requirement, then you will not have a CA state income tax filing requirement.
