Hi all,
I own a small LLC with my brother that we're just getting off the ground. The business is registered in DE and the address is listed as my home in VA.
This year, we actually have no income and only small losses. Our only purchases have been online products (LegalZoom, Google Apps, etc.).
I'm preparing our Federal taxes but trying to consider -- what state taxes do we need to file?
Presumably, we'll need to file $300 to DE. But do I also need to file taxes for VA because the business address is listed here? That seems like it'd be incorrect. Just want to make sure that I'm not doing anything wrong by not considering filing VA taxes.
Yes, you will need to file a Virginia business tax return because your tax home is in Virginia. See this link for the Virginia Corporate filing requirements: https://www.tax.virginia.gov/corporation-income-tax
In general, you file a state return for any state in which you generate income or have a business presence. This is a complex topic and you may wish to contact a local tax expert to assist you as your business grows.
