Can I get a New York State tax credit if I worked in Atlanta for six months and then moved to New york City? I paid taxes in Georgia and New York State.

Turbotax is giving me the credit, but my tax advisor says no.

It seems like you are a part-year resident of Georgia for first half of the year then are a part year resident of NY for the second half of the year.

You would only be allowed a credit for taxes paid to Georgia, if you worked in Georgia and were taxed in Georgia during your NY residency period.

ok..that was what my tax advisor told me. How do I rework my return to get rid of the credit?

I can't figure out where to "lose" it.

You could delete the states and start over again.  If you do or don't, I would make sure that you are filing a part year resident return for both states.  If you don't delete the state and start over again, I would go to the area where the credit for other state taxes are paid and remove all your entries.

I'll try this. FYI this is a definite bug in the Turbotax program. I figured I shouldn't be getting the credit, but it seems the system does not adjust for dates of residence.
