Bug in Massachusetts tuition expenses?

I used 529 funds to pay for high school expenses for my son.  I did this on my federal return.

As part of doing this, I had to enter the high school expenses as well as information on the 529 distribution.

When I look at the forms on my Massachusetts Filing - I see the high school expenses that I entered on the federal form listed on a tuition credit worksheet as "Undergraduate" expenses.  I think this might be a bug and it might be giving me a credit on my state return that I do not deserve.

Can anyone at Intuit look into this?  It appears that I can't edit this by hand.

No, it is not a bug. Yes, you are correct, you cannot deduct high school expenses at the state level. Massachusetts only allows a deduction for college tuition. See 2019 Massachusetts Form 1 Instructions page 22.

To adjust this in TurboTax, follow these steps:

  • From the left menu, select State>
  • Continue>
  • At Massachusetts, select Edit>
  • You should see the summary screen, You've Finished Your Massachusetts Return.  Scroll to Adjustments and click Update
  • You initially are going to have a lot of unrelated questions, but this will get you to an education expenses section where you can click none
