AL tax: Two exempt income sources

I am filing my Alabama state tax.  I am a military retiree and my wife is drawing Social Security.  Both are listed as non-taxable by the state.  Turbo Tax only lists my retiree income as non-taxable, but not my wife's.  I have used the "edit" button, but there is nowhere to identify the Social Security income.  I have listed both on the "Federal Income Not Taxed in Alabama", but the form states "What you enter here will not change your refund or amount due".    So how do I fix this?

What about on the actual tax return? Is it showing up taxable? Take a look:

  1. on the left side go to Tax Tools
  2. click on Tools
  3. Pop up box, click on View Tax Summary
  4. left side, click Preview my AL

Is the income being taxed or is it exempt in the return? If it is not showing in the return, then all is well.

Did you list her Social Security under the SSA 1099 or maybe the 1099-R? If it is under the SSA 1099, it should be pulling through exempt.

I can't find a "Tax Tools" anywhere on the page.  But I did bring up the AL Form 40 and it appears that my wife's Social Security is not listed under income, so it appears that the system works.  I'm as comfortable as anyone can be when working with our Byzantine income tax system (paid political announcement).

Thanks for your assistance.

On the State Taxes Tab, there is a section "Other Information" where it seems you have to manually list the information to have it show up on Part IV lines associated with "5" on the 40 form.
