You cannot add a PDF document if you are going to electronically file your tax return with TurboTax.
TurboTax will include any necessary forms with your state return.
If the forms cannot be electronically filed, you will be given instructions on how to send the forms in if needed.
Additional info: I need to include a PDF document with my State Tax Return. but when I click on document, an address appears the includes my drive, user name and folder name along with document name. Then Turbo rejects submission when filing. What information is TurboTax wanting expecting when I click on the PDF button? If its an address, how do I provide address of document without including all the other information on my computer?
Again, you cannot attach a PDF file to the TurboTax State tax return. You will need to print and mail the return. TurboTax does not allow a PDF to be attached to an electronically filed return.
The issue is with Long Term Care Insurance reporting. Last year TurboTax informed me that I had to mail this info to the state separate from my electronic filing. This year it again states that the state requires this information but provides a screen with a field to enter something and a "trigger" labeled PDF. When I click on the trigger, the field highlights. I then go to my PDF document and click on it and TurboTax fills in the location information. TurboTax checked state tax return with no errors and no mention of having to mail my info separately like I did last year. When I submitted for filing, TurboTax then tell me that it cannot access the PDF and rejects the submission. HELP!
Are you in the Deluxe version of TurboTax? Attaching a PDF to a state return has worked for others as long as they are using Deluxe.

@anselmofamily If your state return allows for a PDF attachment, it will so indicate in the state interview. Be on the lookout for it and make sure you follow instructions to attach it. You also have to have properly answered any state interview questions correctly to trigger the system to ask for the PDF.
In the state of GA, we have a community preceptorship credit that started in 2019. I correctly input the information and turbotax prompted me to add the PDF form. I go to the location and actually attach it. Bullets turn green as if I attached it correctly. Then I move to the next page and it shows it never attached. It's very bizarre as I don't recall this issue last year. That's why I was wondering if this is something new this year where turbotax is no longer accepting PDF forms.
@anselmofamily If you are having a specific issue with this, you might need to contact customer service. We have not received widespread reports of an issue attaching documents, but that certainly doesn't mean you are not experiencing a challenge on your return. Thanks @DanielV01 . I did talk to quite a few people yesterday at customer service and it seems that the consensus is that Turbotax no longer allows PDFs to be attached to GA state returns. So I'm just out of luck and now have to mail in my return for state. But I can still e-file Federal. Bummer. I haven't done that in a decade. Not sure I remember how. Ha.
Frankly, this is going to be a deal breaker for me going forward. This is not at all a hard technical fix. Get with it, Intuit! RIDICULOUS that you have not already built this into your software. Geez....
Yes Turbotax provides the needed state forms for filing, EXCEPT for Pennsylvania Schedule D. Turbotax cannot handle more than 100 entries. I see this issue asked for many years with no resolution by Turbotax
All the Turbo Tax Experts are saying you can not add a PDF to your state return. But Turbo Tax asks you to import your document as a PDF then upload it to your state return. Turbotax also says "you must e file your return" An upload button is offered with a box for the pathway. After you've located the form and click next, Turbo Tax says "great we've added your PDF to your return". But that PDF can not be located.
If you can not add a PDF to your return then there is definitely a glitch in this program.

Theres a glitch with Turbotax. In my case I have a one time $1000 Nurse Credit from New Mexico. But I must include form PIT-NC. Turbo Tax says to import that form then upload it as a PDF. A address box is given for the upload with an "upload" button. After the form is supposedly uploaded and you click to the next section Turbo Tax says "great we've attached your PDF to your return". But the PDF can not be located!
So can this section be updated?

Unfortunately, the PDF cannot be attached to your return.

I suggest you file the Federal return electronically and print and mail the New Mexico return. When you print , please sign the return and attach the required form for the Nursing Credit. This is a one time credit so you should not have to do this next year.

It seems no one understands my message. I now understand I can not add a PDF if filing electronically, but turbotax does not include that information. It only offers an option to upload and attach your PDF to your return. Isnt that a problem with the software?
I understand normally a document cannot be added to a state return, but I was just asked by state for last years Louisiana R-10606 form to verify payment of taxes to neighbor state Mississippi. I checked my TurboTax return and that form was not in state submitted package. I provided state with W-2 and they were happy, but I want to be prepared for next year, so how can I have this form attached to electronic return or will I have to mail entire return?
