To enter a state or local tax refund (Form 1099-G) -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Other Common Income
  • On Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns, click the start or update button

Or enter state refunds in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to state refunds

Hi - When I get to the second screen nothing matches my 1099-G. Only 2 boxes are filled on my form = 2 ($645) and 3 (2018). Nothing seems applicable!

This screen?  After you have selected your state, You enter the amount from box 2 in the box for Total Refund Received in 2019

Are you referring to this box - Total of all your payments and withholding?

That amount is from your state tax return for 2018 for your state tax payments -

Add up any payments you made to your state or locality, along with any state or locality withholdings from the previous tax year, including:

- Amounts withheld on your W-2, W-2G, and 1099
- Estimated tax payments for 2018
- Add any paid in 2019 for 2018 (it's common for the fourth quarterly payment to be made in January)
- Overpayment from 2017 applied toward your 2018 return
- Payments made with an extension of time to file
- Payments made when you filed your return
- Refundable credits

If you itemized your deductions in 2018, you do need to enter that amount in your return. Here is how to enter that:

  1. Use the search box in the upper right corner to search for 1099G state refund.
  2. Click on Go to state and local tax refunds.
  3. Answer the first question, Yes.
  4. Check the box next to State or local income tax refunds, click Continue.
  5. Box 2 is your total refund received in 2019.
  6. Box 3 is the year that the refund is for.

There will be some follow up questions to determine if the refund is taxable in 2019.

Hi - Using the search box only gives me previous answers to similar questions regarding 1099-G forms. Not sure how I can click on Go to state and local tax refunds. Thanks

Hi - Figured it out. Needed to search 'State Refunds' for the jump to state link to appear. Thanks!

How do we fill out line 10b on the 1099-G form for DC if there is no line 10b. Yes, I had taxes taken out but all I have is the Federal I.D Number. What should be entered for that space? Can I leave it blank since it is not on my form?

You'll need to contact the issuer of Form 1099-G -- probably the DC Department of Employment Services, if the form reflects unemployment -- to get the information.

The ID number may be the same as the Payer's TIN in the upper left of the return, but you need to make sure.

You indicate that you had state taxes withheld, so you apparently have an amount on line 11 (State income tax withheld).  If that's the case, TurboTax will require an entry in line 10b.
