When I try to put in a 1099-MISC for my wife's STD after having our first child, it treats it as if she was a self employed worker. Is there another way to report this?

It asks very bizarre questions like what "industry" the work falls under and wants to charge "self-employment tax in addition to income tax" and it just feels like I'm doing something wrong since this wasn't a "job" but short term disability while she recovered and spent time with our newborn.

Normally short-term disability is reported on a W-2.

Regardless, you can enter the 1099-MISC under

"Other Common Income"

Income from Form 1099-MISC

Enter the 1099-MISC

Describe it as short-term disability

Select "No, it did not involve work"

Select only 2022 as the year received

Select "No, it didn't involve an intent to make money"

Done

It will be listed as taxable income on Schedule 1 but not as Self-Employment
