My daughter worked for a company but it was paid volunteer work since it was through a school program. So she got a 1099 nec should she have to pay taxes?

Yes, your daughter will likely need to pay taxes on the income reported on the 1099-NEC. The IRS considers income reported on a 1099-NEC as taxable self-employment income

To enter the Form 1099-NEC in TurboTax:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Navigate to 1099-NEC:
    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to 1099-NEC.
    • TurboTax Desktop: Search for 1099-NEC and select the Jump to link.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions. When you’re done, we’ll ask you a few questions and help you through entering any expenses you may have so that you can reduce your taxable income.
