I took paid leave and received a 1099 Misc from the Employment Dept, when I enter it do I answer yes or no on the question did in involve intent to earn money?

If I answer yes its included as Self employed and Section Schedule C but its not self employed income?

You should answer no.

Here are the steps to report family leave so your return does not show self-employment:

  • Navigate to Federal > Wages & Income > Other Common Income> Form 1099-MISC> Start or Revisit
  • Enter the 1099-MISC as printed, Continue
  • Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC: "Paid Family Leave" or similar
  • Select None of these uncommon situations apply, then continue
  • Select No, it didn’t involve work that's like your main job and continue
  • The next screen asks how often you get income from Paid Family Leave.  Select only the year of this specific 1099-MISC, 2024.
