I received a 1099-NEC as a First Responder Recognition Payment from the state. It is not self-employment, but it's asking for business information.

How do I file this?

report the form but when questioned indicate that the income is not for a business.

Since the income is not related to a self-employed business, try entering the Form 1099-NEC on its own and answer the questions to indicate that it is not business income.

Then, if that does not work as expected, try entering just the income amount so that it is included as part of the tax return.   You will need to delete the Form 1099-NEC that you have already entered, but keep the Form 1099-NEC in your tax records in the event that the IRS has any questions.

Use these steps to enter the income:

  1. Go to the Federal > Wages & Income section
  2. Scroll to the bottom to find Less Common Income
  3. Scroll to find Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  4. Scroll to the bottom to find Other Reportable Income
  5. Enter a description for the income on the Form 1099-NEC and the amount of income reported
