I received 1099-Misc for securities lending earnings. How should this be classified?

Enter this Miscellaneous Income:

  1. Click on  Federal tab.
  2. Click on Income & expenses.
  3. Scroll down to Less Common Income.
  4. Click on Start or Update button Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  5. On the next screen (Let's Work on Any Miscellaneous Income), click the Start or Update button for Other reportable income.
  6. Did you receive any other taxable income.  Click Yes.
  7. Other Taxable Income, enter a description (e.g., Securities Lending Earnings) and the amount.  Click Continue.
  8. Click Done.

The income will be reported on Schedule 1 line 8 (z) with the description that you entered.

Should we disregard the note on the screen "Do no enter income reported ion Form 1099-MISC"?

If you feel uncomfortable with this method of reporting, you may also report an IRS form 1099-MISC as income that is not self-employment income by following these steps:

Follow the steps below to report income on an IRS Form 1099-MISC.

  • Select Federal from the left side menu.
  • Click on Wages & Income.
  • Scroll down to Other Common Income.  Click Show more.
  • Click Start / Revisit to the right of 1099-MISC.
  • Enter a description under Describe the reason.
  • Select 'None of these apply' at the screen Does one of these uncommon situations apply?
  • Select 'No' at the screen Did the income involve work.
  • Select 'No' at the screen Did the income involve an intent to earn money?

The entry will be reported:

  • on line 8z of Schedule 1 of the Federal 1040 tax return, and
  • on line 8 of the Federal 1040 tax return.

View the entries at Tax Tools / Print Center / Print, save or preview this year's return / Include government and TurboTax worksheets.

Your example doesnt seem to line up with what i see in the UI, referring to this...

I can follow up to that point but then hitting continue, my UI was a little different.

I was eventually able to solve my problem. There were a few more prompts that came up after the ones mentioned above.

I had to leave a few of them blank and just kept hitting continue.  I was under the impression a response was required so I had been filling out a box. I *do* expect another 1099-MISC for next year so I had been checking that box which turns out to be the wrong thing to do. Just leave it blank!

There was one final prompt that asked me if i paid employees i believe to which I was required to respond in which case I selected no.
