I got a 1099-NEC for a lawsuit payment. I can't enter the 1099-NEC because it says, 'MISSING INFO'. How do I enter it when it's not self-employment income?

It doesn't allow me to just do the "other common income" 1099-NEC.

If your 1099-NEC is for back wages, you can't include it as other income. 1099-NEC is used to report nonemployee compensation. If you had other income reported on this form, you need to get a corrected form.

Follow these steps to go to the Schedule C section of your return:

On the top right corner of TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner).

  1. Type in “schedule c” (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find).
  2. Click on “Jump to schedule c”.
  3. Click on the blue “Jump to schedule c” link

The form is not for back wages.

Should they have given me a 1099-MISC?
If I file a schedule c, what do I put for employment since It wasn’t self employment or anything?

I follow the instructions on TurboTax for non-employment income but, like I said, it says MISSING INFORMATION and will not let me proceed.

thanks for your response.

It sounds like they should have given you a 1099 Misc with the payment amount in box 3. I would contact the payer and request a new form.
