If you received a 1099, then you need to answer the questions following the input of the 1099 so it flows to Other Income, rather than a Schedule C.
If you received a 1099-NEC:
- Open your return.
- Search for 1099-NEC with the magnifying glass tool at the top of the page.
- Click on the Jump to 1099-NEC link at the top of the search results.
- Edit your 1099-NEC.
- Continue past the information entered.
- Describe the reason for the 1099-NEC.
- On the screen Does one of these uncommon situations apply? answer This is not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual, it is from a sporadic activity or hobby (this is not common).
If you received a 1099-MISC:
- Search for 1099-misc and select the Jump-to link.
- Edit your 1099-MISC.
- Continue past the amounts already entered.
- Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC.
- Answer Does one of these uncommon situations apply?
- Answer Did this involve work that's like my main job?
- Answer How often did you get this income?
- Answer Did this involve an intent to earn money?
- Answer the remaining on-screen questions.
To enter Other Income (in the situation where no 1099 was received), please follow the steps below:
- Open your return.
- Click on Federal Taxes.
- Go to Wages & Income
- Scroll to the bottom under Less Common Income select Start (or Update) for Miscellaneous Income.
- Choose the appropriate category and enter your Other Income
Lastly, please delete any Schedule C that was populated by following the instructions below:
- Search for Schedule C with the magnifying glass tool on the top of the page.
- Select the Jump to Schedule C link in the search results.
- If you get to a self-employment summary screen, delete the self-employment income line with the trash can icon.
- If you get to the question Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? answer No.
- Click on Tools.
- Click on Delete a Form.
- Scroll down to your Schedule C and Schedule SE and click Delete.
