I am a non-resident alien and my salary is a graduate stipend self-reported as other income. I am not supposed to pay social security and medicare, but I can not find any options for those sections. How can I do this?
Non-resident aliens file Form 1040-NR. TurboTax does not support this form. You can file through TurboTax partner Sprintax.com.
You will be able to report your income correctly on Form 1040-NR.
Got it. This was really helpful, I will try sprintax, thank you so much
It turns out I can't use Sprintax because I am considered a resident for tax purposes and was sent back to TurboTax.
I am a resident for tax purposes, yet I'm not supposed to pay taxes for medicare and social security. I am still seeking a way to specify this with TurboTax.
If social security or Medicare taxes were withheld in error from pay that is not subject to these taxes, contact the employer who withheld the taxes for a refund.
If you are unable to get a full refund of the amount from your employer, file a claim for refund with the Internal Revenue Service on Form 843, Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement and Form 8316, Information Regarding Requests for Refund of Social Security Tax Erroneously Withheld on Wages Received by a Nonresident Alien on an F, J, or M Type VisaPDF with supporting documents.
TurboTax does not support Form 843. You can prepare it yourself or see a local accountant.
