Hi, I received royalty payments from the university because a company licensed our patent that I am one of the inventors, box 2 in 1099-MISC. schedule C or E?

I am a research fellow working in the university.

Since you are one of the inventors, the income needs to be reported on Schedule C.

  1.  Open your return
  2. Search for 1099-MISC
  3. Select the Jump to link in the search results
  4. Enter your 1099-MISC, and enter the income in Box 2 - Royalties
  5. On the following screen, choose the source of your royalty income:
    • Royalty income from your business, including artist royalties or operating a natural resources business (Schedule C) – This includes income from natural resources that you extract from your property as well as royalty payments from the intellectual property you created as an inventor, writer, artist, and so forth.

Once you've selected the proper classification, follow the onscreen instructions.
