Handycap Van conversion tax deduction

I have a handcap son where last month we had to finally buy a wheelchair accessible van due to his growth/weight.

The dealer said we can deduct the van "conversion" component on our taxes. They even broke out a separate "Conversion Bill of Sale" which was $36.999.00.

I just want to confirm this and that there's a particular place to incorporate the information into my process early next year. And assume this would tilt the probability of "itemizing" for this year where in the past it has not be advantageous.

Please advise and thanks in advance for the guidance.

Thanks @Cwade1 for your question!

Yes, you would need to Itemize your deductions, to claim it as a medical expense (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf) subject to being an itemized deduction and the 7-1/2% of AGI rule.  Save the receipt, in case of an audit. The deduction is claimed on schedule A, along with your other itemized deductions. Please note that Itemized Deductions will only "help" when they exceed your standard deduction.

You can enter Medical expenses by following these steps:

  • In TurboTax, open your tax return
  • Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Deductions & Credits on top of the screen
  • Scroll down to All Tax breaks, locate the section Medical and click on Show more
  • Click Start next to Medical Expenses.
  • enter as supplies & equipments
