Worried that when I first began my 2024 return a refund amount immediately showed.

When I first downloaded the software for my 2024 return then allowed it to transfer from last year, a large refund amount in green appeared at the top of the page. As I proceeded, that number certainly changed.

I've used Turbotax Premier since TY 2021 and don't recall that ever happening before I input any data. Why would it post a refund amount immediately, and is something very wrong?

You should be able to determine if your tax return is correct by previewing it before you file.  If the numbers are reflective of what you entered into TurboTax than that "initial refund" amount had no bearing on your tax return.

I have never seen that happen or have never experienced it with my TurboTax program.

Previewing your return before you file will give you some assurance that it is correct and accurate.

Try previewing your actual return as it is a more accurate reflection of your return.

You can get to your tax return in TurboTax desktop as follows:

  1. Switch to Forms Mode, and then  (see screenshots below for additional guidance)
  2. Scroll through your forms in the left panel and
  3. Click on the form you want to preview (Example Form 1040)

You can get to your Tax Return in TurboTax Online as follows:

  1. Go to "Tax Tools" in your left panel,
  2. Select "Tools" and then
  3. Select "View Tax Summary" and
  4. Select "Preview Form 1040"

In TurboTax Desktop, it will look like this to switch to "Forms Mode":

Your left panel (list of forms) will look something like this:

In TurboTax Online Online it will look like this:
