Why does Turbotax insist that some of the $3000. I gave to my methodist church is taxable? It is from a charitable trust out of my IRA.

Please follow these steps to enter the charitable contribution from your IRA:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on the Search box on the top and type “1099-R”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and enter all your information
  4. Continue until "Tell us if any of these uncommon situations apply" screen and check "I transferred all or part of this money directly to charity"
  5. Continue through the questions

Please make sure that the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box is marked and your birthday is entered correctly or the option "I transferred all or part of this money directly to charity" won't show up.

You can verify your entry on line 4, if all of the IRA distribution was transferred to charity then you will see $0 in  line 4b (taxable amount).

  1. Click on "Tax Tools" in the left menu
  2. Click "Tools"
  3. Click "View Tax Summary" in the Tool Center window
  4. Click on "Preview my 1040" on the left
