why do i get a penalty for an rmd I took?

My RMD was 1900, I took 2 distributions. I was for the exact RMD, the other over. I recvd one 1099R. Why is TT showing a penalty?

Were both distributions included on the same 1099-R?

If so, there are questions as you go through the interview

  • Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).
    • RMD due by Dec. 31, 2024
    • Did you post $1,900
  • How much of this distribution applied to your December 31, 2024 RMD?
    • Some of this distribution applied to the December 31, 2024 RMD
    • Enter $1.900

This should clear the error

The total distro was over 25k.  The original was everything but the Oct $1900 RMD.  both were on the same 1099-r?  I did not get asked questions about that on my interview.  Should I just delete it and add it again?

Yes, it may be best to delete the 1099-R and re-enter using the information above.  @crolysinitaly
