Where can I state that I have retired this year before I begin my return? The choices given do not show that option.

In the very first part of the return it says any big changes last year? The choices are: Got a new job, bought a house, marital change, new child/dependent, and moved. Obviously none of these fit my choice needed.

Those questions at the beginning are not applicable to your tax return.

They are for TurboTax to guide you within the program.

If you retired this year and took a Retirement Distribution, you may need to enter a Form 1099-R.

Otherwise, you can make changes to your Income while entering a W-2 (or reporting not having one this year).

Here's Tax Tips for Retirement you may find helpful.

If you have a SSA1099 from Social Security to enter

Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

To enter your retirement income, Go to  Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security>IRA  401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.
