I failed to input on my original 1040 the info from a 1099-R I received for a direct rollover of an old 401K into my current employer's 401K. This had no effect on taxable income or my refund (which I already received), but my original 1040 is inaccurate because line 16a is blank. (Line 16b is remains zero because it's not taxable.)
I have already filled out the 1040X via Turbotax, but I'm confused about the instructions -- Form 1040X does not reflect what the change to my original 1040 is, except in the comment I wrote. When I printed out the package from Turbotax, there is a new 1040 behind the 1040X which has the correct numbers in lines 16a/b. Do I send that as well with the 1040X? In the IRS instructions, it doesn't mention sending a changed 1040 anywhere. If I do send that, do I include all the schedules etc. (which have not changed)? And do I send a copy of the 1099-R? Thanks very much.
You send the 1040X and the 1040 because it changed, even though there was no tax effect. No need to send any of the schedules or the 1099-R.
