What is Social Security/Railroad Retirement Benefits and is there some special Railroad Social Security or do I put in my normal Social Security benefits?

This page is very confusing. What does it mean? What goes here?

Which form are you trying to enter on your return?

The Railroad Retirement program was established in the 1930s. It provides retirement, survivor, unemployment, and sickness benefits to individuals who have spent a substantial portion of their career in railroad employment, as well as to these workers' families. This article describes the history, benefit structure, and funding of the Railroad Retirement program.

The Form RRB-1099 tax statement is issued by the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) and represents payments made to you in the tax year indicated on the statement.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form that's mailed to people who receive Social Security benefits.

All SSA-1099 forms get entered in the same place:

  1. Open (continue) your return in TurboTax
  2. In the search bar, search for the term Social Security benefits and then select the Jump to link at the top of your search results
  3. On the screen Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits in 20XX? answer Yes and select Continue
  4. On the next screen, check the box beside the form that you actually received, then enter the amounts from your form(s) in the boxes provided
    • If you received multiple SSA-1099s, add up the amounts for each box and enter them together

The menu area for SSA-1099 form benefits, is also used for those getting an RRB-1099 form...similar forms, so they lump the two together as an Either/Or situation.  Once you start into an entry for that area, those with an RRB-1099 check a box to ensure they get the RRB form to fill out, and not the SSA form.
