What if there is no taxable amount listed on a 1099R .(UNKNOWN)Do I use the line 1 gross distribution?

The 1099R list gross distribution line 1.  Line 2 states UNKNOWN

Do I use total gross distribution? Line 1 as taxable income.?

No, leave the amount blank, and check the box (2b) that says 'Taxable Amount Not Determined'.  TurboTax will ask you questions to determine what portion if any is taxable to you.
