What happens if you enter the wrong amount on federal income tax withheld? I heard they’ll just give me that amount and ill have to pay it back is that correct?

I put a higher amount btw, i read the wrong box.

Yes, if this is a bona fide error.

But the IRS will probably catch the error by computer matching (they have a copy of your W-2) and correct your refund.
