If it's asking for an EIN number you are entering it in the wrong place. There is no EIN on social security SSA-1099.

If you only get ssi or SS or SSDI it is not taxable and you do not have to file a return.

Try going to the search box and type in SSA-1099 or Social Security Benefits.  That will give you a Jump To link to take you directly to it.

OR

Enter a SSA-1099, SSA-1099-SM or RRB-1099  under

Federal Taxes on the left side or top

Wages and Income

Then scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security

Then the second line - Social Security (SSA-1099. RRB-1099) - click the Start or Revisit  button

Up to 85% of Social Security becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security, reaches:

Married Filing Jointly: $32,000

Single or head of household: $25,000

Married Filing Separately: 0

You do not enter a Form SSA-1099 in the W-2 section for wages.

To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099

There have been no other questions posted here under your username julia-thompson97 since you asked some quesitions in 2019.

If your ONLY income has been Social Security you do not need to file a tax return.   Do you have some other question about that?

If you are trying to enter a SSA1099 it sounds like you are in the wrong place.   You do not enter it as a W-2.

Do not try to enter your SSA1099  or RR1099RB as a W-2.  Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

Do you wish to file for some other reason, such as for a stimulus payment?
