If both of you are not covered by a retirement plan and you double-checked that your W-2 entry doesn't have box 13 checked then you want to check your answers during the IRA contribution interview:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “IRA contributions”
  3. Click on “Jump to IRA contributions"
  4. Select “traditional IRA
  5. Answer "No" to "Retirement Plan Coverage?"

Please see IRA Deduction Limits for additional information.

I clicked Jump to IRA contributions". I went thru the IRA interview 2 times and no where did I see the question Retirement Plan Coverage? Can you be specific as to which question in interview asks for Retirement Plan Coverage or maybe post a screen shot? I am not seeing that question.

My Wife's W2 was an uploaded image and it did not have box 13 checked. I did not have a W2 this year. .

THanks,

The question "Retirement Plan Coverage?" will appear right after the "Did You Change Your Mind?" screen (see screenshot below).

If the question doesn't come up then please double-check that TurboTax didn't read the upload wrong and put a checkmark in box 13 for retirement:

  1. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “W-2”
  2. Click on “Jump to W-2” and you should see the “Here's your W-2 info” screen
  3. Review your entry that box 13 retirement isn't checked

Does your wife's W-2 have any code in box 12? If the code in box 12 shows a retirement plan then the question won't come up either.
