Transfer to an IRA before turning 70 1/2 Transfer was done in 2019 on 11/06/2019 & I did not turn 70 1/2 until December of 2019. Do I still have to pay a penalty?

There is no penalty for transferring (rolling over) a retirement account to an IRA at any age.

You may be referring to the early withdrawal penalty which applies to a withdrawal from a retirement account before age 59 1/2.

As you turned 70 1/2 in December 2019, please remember to take your first RMD (required minimum distribution) before April 15, 2020 and your second RMD before December 31, 2020.

Did you receive any Form 1099-R reporting the movement of this money to another IRA?

If so, what is the code in box 7 of this Form 1099-R?

Is the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box marked?

Did you receive your RMD for 2019 from this account before moving the funds?
