I contributed to traditional IRA in 2024 and recharacterized it to Roth IRA also in 2024. But due to job changes, i’m now exceeding the limit for Roth IRA contribution. I have to recharacterize from Roth IRA to traditional IRA. I requested Scwab to recharacterize everything to traditional IRA in 2025. How do I report these changes in my 1040? I received 1099-R for the recharacterization in 2024. How do I input these information in TurboTax? Do I need to file 8606?
You need to file Form 8606 if you choose to make the Traditional IRA contribution nondeductible or if it's automatically nondeductible because of your income and a retirement plan at work.
You can first enter a recharacterization to add the Explanation statement and then edit the entry to show just a Traditional IRA contribution. The statement will be still attached to the return.
Form 1099-R with code N needs to be entered on your return but you can ignore Form 1099-R with code R.
