If the amount you received is less than what was reported on your Form 1099-G, then you should report the amount on the Form 1099-G.  The difference may be due to an offset that was paid on your behalf with your state tax refund.

If the amount you received is more than what was reported on your Form 1099-G, then you should report the amount on the Form 1099-G and make sure that you don't also have interest income to report.

Can you help on this topic.  My 1099-G 2020 is 200 dollars higher than my actual refund.

I did amend both state and federal 2019 returns.  Ended up sending back some of the refund to state and got a refund from the federal where we initially paid before the amendment.

The difference is refund state is $2607 but 1099-G is $2916? what causes this offset?

Thanks,

Mark

We cannot explain any offsets by the taxing agencies.  You will need to contact your state taxing authority to find the disconnect.  Here is a link to help you find contact information for your state.

Note, if you used the standard deduction in 2019 your state refund is not taxable so the amount will have no bearing on your return.

However, if you itemized in 2019 as AnnetteB6 mentions you will need to report what is on your 1099G.  Contacting your state agency may result in a corrected 1099G that you would report instead.

Thanks for the advice. I did contact my tax agency and they helped me. The form they sent was 1099-G for 2018. I missed it was 2018.  They never sent the 2019 1099-G.  They said use my refund from state 2019 and add to federal income tax.

Thanks for the help and it was my error not noticing
