TurboTax desktop is not correctly calculating the taxable amount in line 5b of the Federal 1040. I have checked all of my 1099-R forms and come up with a different amount for line 5b. My calculation for line 5b is $176,852.35. TurboTax comes up with $156,377.
Can anyone come up with an explanation? Has anyone else experienced this?
No one here can venture a guess as to why the numbers are different when you calculate it versus the TurboTax calculation since no one has access to your tax return unless you provide it.
If you want to provide a diagnostic copy of your return, then someone can take a closer look to see what is happening with line 5b. The diagnostic file will not contain personally identifiable information, only numbers related to your tax forms.
If you would like to provide us with the diagnostic file, follow the instructions below and post the token number along with which version of TurboTax you are using and what states you are filing in a follow-up thread. A screenshot of the token number would be helpful since the number may be redacted automatically in some cases.
Use these steps if you are using TurboTax Online:
If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, use these steps:
Does it say anything by line 5b like Rollover? Does 5b equal 5a? Are you adding up your 1099R forms line 1 or 2a? Maybe it put a 1099R on line 4b instead of 5b? What are the codes in box 7?
AnnetteB6: Thank you for this guidance. I will try to do this tomorrow as my head is spinning right now. I assume that I have CD/downloaded version because I have the "desktop" version? (There was no CD involved this year.)
And a final question: what is the "token number?"
The Token number is a long string of numbers you get when you go to Send File to Agent. Then post the number here in the forum for them to check it out. If you have the Desktop program go up to the top menu bar Online. Then Send Tax File to Agent. It will create a sanitized file of your return without your personal info so they can check it over. I can make you a screen shot from Windows. Are you on Windows or Mac?
Volvo Girl:
Thanks for replying. No, there is no "rollover."
5b does not equal 5a (nor should it).
The values from the 1099R forms are for box 2a.
I've already accounted for an IRA distribution on line 4a; all other distributions are on line 5a.
The codes in box 7 of the 1099Rs are all "7" except for the IRA distribution, which is correctly accounted for on line 4a of the 1040.
I just made you a screen shot for Windows to get the Token number
